Truckee River Fishing Report:
The Truckee has been busy. Both with fish & people. The Truckee trout get edgy with added traffic, so put your stealthy skills to use. Mornings and evenings have been best. Bright sun and warm afternoon water temps cause the fish to seek out relief in shadowed water or deep pools. Warm water lacks oxygen content. Search out turbulent plunge pools or pocket water for higher oxygenated water.
Bugs are all over the place. Big Golden Stoneflies, (Be sure to check out the cool YouTube vid!) >
little yellow stones, caddis, and Pale Morning Duns top the list. Oh yeah . . . and it is hopper time. Those bugs you hear clickity clacking on the banks are grasshoppers, and trout love them. Windy days can provide good hopper action. Other terrestrials can entice fish as well. Ants and beetles being other productive terrestrial patterns.
Crayfish are also very active right now. Crayfish molt frequently during high water temps. After each molting, the crayfish are soft-shelled, and a favorite delicacy of the big Truckee bruisers.
Dead drift 'em, swing 'em, strip 'em, just be sure to give a crayfish pattern a shot or two throughout the day!
It has been a spectacular year on the Truckee. Lots of huge fish have been caught and released, and plenty of juvenile and stocked trout give beginner flyfisherman/women/children great practice sessions!
